Reiki is a healing technique based on the principle that the practitioner is able to transmit Universal energy by means of touch or over distance to trigger the natural healing processes of the person to restore physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Reiki has origins in India and ancient Tibet. The word Reiki was formulated by Dr Mikao Usui, the modern founder of Reiki who rediscovered the formula in early 1900s, to describe the nature of the energy that this technique produces.
The word Reiki is comprised of two Japanese words:
Rei, meaning ‘universal,’ ‘spiritual consciousness, ‘all-knowing’ and
Ki (or in Chinese Medicine, Qi), meaning ‘breath’, ‘vital radiant energy’, ‘life-force energy’.
Reiki’s life-force energy is said to be ‘universal’ because it is the essential underlying energy that makes up every living thing. By boosting and balancing your life-force energy through Reiki you can bring health and vitality to all levels of your being: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

In Chinese Ki is Chi, in Hindu - Prana, and in English - breath... Russian researchers call it bioplasmic energy, Hippocrates - nature’s life force, the Kahunas - mana, and Christ called it light. It has also been called cosmic energy, bioenergy, and vital force....
Reiki is universal life energy. Reiki is the fire of life. Reiki is light-energy of a higher, less dense order than that of the body emotions and mind....this life force is derived from one source while manifesting in a seemingly endless array of unique, outer forms. To experience wholeness is to experience oneness with all living things - to identify with the cosmic life force- to experience yourself as pure, white light.’ (Ray, pp.20, 33-35)
